Today during our Science afternoon, the grade 5 students from Areas 45 & 40 put their benches to the test! Each group was given the same materials and asked to build a bench that could hold as many math textbooks as possible. Additional supplies could be "bought" but the groups had to decide if they wanted to keep the costs down or purchase extra supplies. This was a great example of STEM ( Science Technology Engineering and Math) in action! One group exceeded my expectations and build a bench that held 40 math textbooks! Using what they had learned about columns and reinforcing columns they were able to build a bench in the shape of a column which was able to hold up this huge load!
